Just north of the Tampa International Airport is Anderson Road Café where we headed for our weekend breakfast review.  Located in a mostly industrial area, Anderson Road Café mostly caters to the local workers and serve breakfast & lunch Monday – Saturday.             Anderson Road CafeThe outside of the building is rather non-descript with the inside décor part nautical, part country store and part baseball cap rack.  Wicker chairs, blue curtains and mounted fish make for an interesting look.

Anderson Road Café isn’t your eat-to-be-seen SoHo brunch spot. This is a true mom & pop greasy diner, which is a good thing. The condiment bottles sticking to the vinyl tabletop, well, not a good thing, but we’ll overlook that.

Service was prompt and friendly and prices were a lot lower than expected.  The breakfast menu carries the staples from egg platters to omelets with some regional dishes like fried fish and grits.  We never can resist country sausage gravy, so that was a given on one of our dishes.

Country Fried Steak with Sausage Gravy ($8.25) – 2 eggs any style (scrambled), breaded fried steak topped with sausage gravy with choice of potato (hash browns) or grits and toast.  While not the ‘low calorie’ version of breakfast, this was a great choice to test the comfort food here.

The gravy was loaded with flavor and we both liked the savory and slightly spicy kick.  The chicken fried steak was not tough and freshly fried.  The hash browns were crisp on the outside and fluffy on the inside and the eggs were fresh.  The toast was the only item we didn’t touch, since the portion was already large enough to fill any appetite.

Two Eggs any style (over medium) with bacon, hash browns and a biscuit ($5.95).  We liked the lower price and felt it was a good value.  The bacon had a nice smoky flavor, but we would have liked it more if was cooked fresh.  The biscuit was ‘ok’ and probably would have been better with a ladle of sausage gravy.

We left Anderson Road Café stuffed and satisfied.  The price is the draw here and we liked the ‘home spun’ feel of the place.  Overall the food was fresh and the service is also a bright spot.
