We’ve heard a lot about Cheddar’s Casual Café and we finally got to top in and give them a try. Cheddar’s is a casual restaurant that could be compared to Chili’s or TGI Friday’s. We found the look and feel of the décor to be a bit more ‘refined’ with exposed brick with accents of copper and wood.
We happened to arrive for lunch just after the rush and were seated immediately in the back area of the restaurant. One look at the menu and we realized why Cheddar’s Casual Café is so popular.
Not only do they have a large variety of dishes, the prices are so low, you almost don’t believe them. They have steaks, salads, chicken, seafood and many sandwiches. Any picky eater will find something here and can have a full meal for a really low price. One thing to note is that burger prices are ‘a-la-carte’, but once you add a side item you are still well under $10. In fact, most full meals hovered around the $10-$15.
Onion Rings ($4.99) – These onion rings are definitely a sight for the eyes.
Battered and fried to a perfect golden brown, they are stacked up neatly and create a tower of fried goodness.
We found the batter was light, but lacked seasoning. We definitely needed to use the two dipping sauces on the plate (a ranch and a horseradish flavor). The portion was so large we had to take most home for later.
Chicken Pot Pie with Side Salad ($7.99) – Jeff loved pot pie and couldn’t pass this up. The side salad came out first and was a nice sized portion.
While the lettuce seemed to be of the ‘bagged’ variety, it was fresh. The honey buttered croissant was amazing.
Freshly baked and still hot out of the oven, we probably could have polished off many more. The pot pie was a nice sized portion with a flaky crust. The filling contained most of the pot pie standards with chicken, peas and carrots. While Jeff was satisfied, he felt that it was lacking some seasoning.
Miso Glaze Salmon ($8.79) – Freshly grilled salmon with a miso glaze served with ginger rice and steamed broccoli. I was trying to keep things a bit light for lunch and went for this dish. The menu showed it was just over 400 calories and it was in the ‘sensible’ menu section.
The portion was hearty and the salmon itself was nicely grilled. The glaze was flavorful and it went really nicely with the ginger rice. I found that the broccoli was overcooked and too soft for my taste.
The service was quick and friendly and we still couldn’t believe the prices. Cheddar’s Casual Café is a great spot to give your wallet a break and still get large portions. While we had some issues with the overall seasoning on a few of our selections, but still it was a great value.
