Finally, we found a good Dim Sum restaurant in Tampa. We’ve noticed that South Tampa & Westshore is a bit ‘light’ in numbers of Chinese Restaurants (even take-out) so our recent search took us north to the USF area.
WOW! Fowler Ave in particular has quite a few ‘authentic’ Chinese Restaurants and they even have Dim Sum! That brings us to our review of Hong Kong House.
Sunday afternoon lunch was very busy at Hong Kong House and we waited maybe 15 minutes for a table. The set-up was more ‘Family Style’ with huge round tables to accommodate large parties.
The inside wasn’t overly decorated and overall made you focus more on the awesome food. We were sat at a large table all by ourselves and settled in for the parade of Dim Sum carts.
Hong Kong House is more ‘authentic’ in feel than almost every other Chinese Restaurant we have been to in Florida (that includes South Florida). We didn’t receive menus, but that is because everyone seemed to be there for the Dim Sum.
If you are not familiar with Dim Sum, you have probably had it and not realized it. Pot stickers, dumplings and any other small portion is considered Dim Sum. Hong Kong House brings the ‘authentic’ Dim Sum carts out too, which are filled with all kinds of tasty items. You pick an item from the cart, and your check is stamped so they can tally up all of your dishes at the end.
The staff did a great job explaining the options on each cart. The first cart consisted of many rolls and salads, which we passed on.
The second cart was full of all kinds of tasty dumplings and noodles.
We ordered a bunch and shared (as you do here) and if you have enough people, they will even put a lazy susan in the middle to make passing them around easier.
We had some great shrimp dumplings and I finally got to try the dumpling with ‘soup’ sealed inside.
A burst of warm broth fills you mouth as soon as you bite into it. Everything had lots of flavor and we even felt that we ate ‘kind of’ healthy with all of the items steamed. We didn’t happen to see the fried Dim Sum cart, but we were full by this point.
We really liked this unique spot and found Hong Kong House would be well worth a re-visit. If you really like dumplings, you really have to go check Hong Kong House out.
The prices were quite reasonable as well. Hong Kong House is located at 1120 E Fowler Ave, Tampa, FL 33612
