There’s nothing better than a hot cup of coffee and a hot, freshly made donut. But working downtown, there’s really limited breakfast options. So I was completely surprised to find a mini food cart on Franklin Street that actually makes the donuts right there in the street.
Located at 301 N Franklin Street, the Hot Donut Co food cart is on the “pedestrian-only” street, making it ideal for the downtown business crowd. The previous day, they had too long of a line for me to make it back to the office on-time, so I came back a little earlier the following day.
Towed behind a pickup truck, the cart is tiny, I’d say barely 75 square feet total. The donuts are made in the rear of the cart using an old machine that looks homemade.
You can see the batter drop into the hot oil, get flipped, then ride up a drying rack and slide down to a rotating plate. While you wait, they have several containers of flavored coffees as well as other breakfast items.
The cake donut has a nice light brown color and with a nicely cooked interior. No complaints from me. Donuts are $1 each or a baker’s dozen for $9. Coffee is $1.50.
