La Bamba Spanish Restaurant is tucked away off a side street in the Tampa Westshore Business District, but everyone in town has no trouble finding them. With very reasonable prices and large portions of food, La Bamba is worth a try.
Hours for La Bamba Spanish Restaurant are limited to Monday – Friday from 7AM to 3 PM, serving breakfast and lunch only. I arrived for breakfast on a Thursday around 8AM and they were rushing around filling take-out orders. The small pick-up window is only for call ahead orders and it was quite busy during my visit. The inside is modest and quite roomy with lots of seats. The ordering area is set up almost like a cafeteria, but breakfast was cooked to order, so it was more ‘fast-causal’ for me.
The breakfast menu has sandwiches and a few omelets with the 2 egg breakfast special with meat. Cuban toast is offered and when I have breakfast at a Cuban restaurant, it’s a must. Ordering was quick, but the food took a little longer than expected. One thing to note is if you are planning to go at peak times, maybe call your order in ahead so it’s ready when you get there.
Two eggs, home fries, Cuban toast and bacon – Everything was fresh and hot with the exception of the bacon. I find that many restaurants cook the bacon ahead and that causes it to become a bit hard and brittle. The bacon flavor was there, but I would have enjoyed it more if it was freshly cooked. The potatoes were seasoned well and were chunks of real potato, crispy outside and tender inside. Eggs were cooked over hard as requested and were fresh. The Cuban toast was a generous piece and toasted perfectly which made me very happy.
The portion was generous and at a price under $5, this is a great value. I’d probably try the ham or sausage on a future visit or even the Cuban Breakfast Sandwich. Service was friendly and as stated, I’d suggest calling in your order ahead if you plan to visit during peak times.
