Our quest for a diner breakfast brought us to Papas New York Diner in Clearwater. What looked promising from the outside, turned in to just a so-so visit and left us still craving some solid diner food.
When we first walked in, we liked the retro diner décor and feel of the place.
But the place really needs a once over from a handyman. The day we visited we had to duck under an extension card that was hanging from the roof across the front door. Also the booth we sat at had noticeable wall damage.
Menu items offer your the diner favorites from egg dishes to waffles and pancakes. Plus the display case in the front had some really good looking cheesecakes, but it was a little too early for that. Service started off a bit too slow, but was redeemed by the end. We must have been also too early for some of the staff (8 AM).
Greek Skillet ($8.95) – Gyro meat, feta, tomatoes, onions with tzatziki sauce. While the eggs were fresh, the ‘pre-sliced’ Gyro meat was a disappointment. This was the uniform ‘deli meat’ version that isn’t our favorite. We find that version a bit too processed tasting and greasy and just not appealing. The rest of the veggies were fresh, but a bit overcooked. The tzatziki was a bit on the bland side and seemed more like just sour cream.
Two eggs, bacon and potatoes ($6.95). The eggs were the highlight on this dish. The bacon had a nice smoky flavor, but was too thin and had been sitting on the ‘warmer’ a bit too long. Potatoes were nicely seasoned, but a bit one note.
