FoodieFrog LOVES Pho and today’s cool weather made perfect weather for hot soup. We found Simply Pho Tampa on our short drive north to Carrollwood. Located in a shopping strip with a Bed, Bath & Beyond and a Fresh Market, it’s not hard to spot the red “simply Pho” sign from the road.
Walking in the door, it was nice to be immediately greeted by a smiling host as we walked in and sat at one of the booths up front.
The surrounding tables were clean and comfortable. The dining room has a modern feel with dark wood and color changing accent lights.
We placed our two soup orders of chicken and shrimp. Pho is a type of Vietnamese Soup that is traditionally made from chicken or beef stock, thin rice noodles, spices and sliced chicken or beef and served with a side dish of fresh herbs like basil, bean sprouts and jalapeno slices. For years, we’ve referred to the dish as “Foe”, but the correct pronunciation is “Fa”
The garnish place was first to arrive and the Thai basil, sprouts, lime and cilantro all looked freshly cut.
The pho bowls were placed on the table and WOW, they were big. I’m so glad I ordered the regular size and not their XL size. My dish was the Chicken Pho ($8.50).
Immediately, I could see a overly generous portion of thickly sliced chicken breast. And by generous, I mean this portion of chicken would have made a meal by itself. The Shrimp Pho ($9.50) also had a hefty helping of large tail-on shrimp.
The pho broth was neither too salty nor over flavored. Today I was Goldilocks and my pho was just the way I like it. The rice noodles were plentiful, but embarrassing I needed to ask for a fork. I can fake it pretty good with sushi, but I’m not really an expert at chopsticks.
Eating noodles with chopsticks usually ends with food splatters everywhere and everyone. Simply Pho Tampa also had spoons we haven’t seen before. They have a little lip on the end that prevents the spoon from slipping into the bowl.
The prices were very reasonable and what we expected to pay. One of the best deals on the menu was the Thai tea for $1.50, a price you certainly don’t see on menus today.
Summary: Simply Pho Tampa was a very pleasurable meal. We were impressed with their food quality, menu prices and wait staff friendliness. You certainly get your money’s worth.
