Susie Q’s Diner in Seminole, FL seems to be a local favorite, but FoodieFrog is not a local. We liked the diner counter seating, old school feel and entertaining décor, but that really was about it.
While the service was friendly, the whole staff seemed a bit disorganized. Frustrations by the wait staff due to the kitchen (and each other) was actually quite fun to watch. The staff eye rolling, un-bused tables, frustrating comments made behind each other’s backs, constant bumping into each other at the narrow kitchen window all made an entertaining wait for several of us with a front row seat at the counter.
Make that a LONG entertaining wait. One to-go order sat in the window for the longest time while each waitress opened and closed the boxes to see if it was their order before walking away. The customer sat next to us and made a comment that everyone has enjoyed his breakfast except him. Even our food could have come out much sooner, but the kitchen seemed to be really off this morning. But, eventually our order arrived and we focused on the food.
Two Eggs with Scrapple, Home Fries and Toast ($5.35). I talked Jeff into trying Scrapple and it comes thick or thin and crispy. Scrapple is a popular breakfast ‘meat’ that originated in Pennsylvania. It’s the scraps of pork mixed with corn meal, oats and spices. It’s formed into a loaf and sliced for breakfast. It looked like gyro meat but it cut like a bread. The best description of the scrapple dish today would be a meat pancake.
After reading what it was, we were glad he ordered it thin and crispy as you can really taste the ‘filler’ that isn’t pork. While interesting and now off the new food bucket list, we both decided we wouldn’t order it again…anywhere. At least the eggs were fresh and the hash browns crispy and a bit greasy.
One Egg with Bacon, Potatoes and Toast ($4.85). My hash browns were even greasier than Jeff’s, so I left half. The bacon was smoky and not too crisp, just how we like it.
