Waffle House sure isn’t what I remember in the past. For these Tampa Foodies, they always reminded us of the worst greasy all-night diners you’d eat on road trips. But the Waffle House on Westshore Blvd is the complete opposite. We found a spotless dining room, speedy service, good food and some of the friendliest servers around.
Waffle House Restaurants are usually all set up the same. Counter seating around an open kitchen with some booths and tables along the windows. The rectangle building doesn’t hold many seats, but they do an excellent job cranking food out and turning those tables.
We found open seating at the counter and was immediately poured coffee. That was fast and we couldn’t wait to order the famous hash browns.
The whole ordering process is like entertainment at Waffle House. They server shouts the order in ‘Waffle House Speak’ to the cooks and in no time, your food is at the table. Amazing.
Texas Breakfast Sandwich ($7.10 for the sandwich and plain hash browns, $1.20 for the hash brown toppings). The bacon is always cooked to order here and it was full of flavor.
The eggs cracked to order and very fresh and the American cheese was the perfect glue to hold it together. The hash browns here are a bit saltier than many, but that is what makes them so good. Scattered, smothered, covered & chunked means add onions, diced ham & cheese. These hit the spot and I could have easily polished off two orders.
Two eggs, bacon, hash browns & waffle ($7.69 for the main dish, $.45 extra for hash brown topping). Jeff went for the hash browns with sausage gravy on top, which he really liked.
The bacon was cooked to his asking (not crisp) and the waffle was freshly made with a fluffy inside and crisp exterior.
And this was the first time I noticed that their waffle iron cooks the name on the waffle. Just in case you forget where you are.
The prices are actually quite low for the quantity of food you get at Waffle House. The quick service is tough to beat and when it’s fresh off the grill, it beats any fast food place for sure. The hash browns (with toppings) and the waffles are still a must for us when we visit and we are glad to see that the Tampa Westshore Waffle House is one of the best around.
